Parse Error

I have somehow messed up my templates and now the forums will not load.  I cannot access admin pages either.  Since the error said it was a parse error, i completely erased the directory and reloaded the forum from a backup several weeks before the problem.  The problem persists.  Even when do a new install of SMF in a new directory, as soon as i try to use the same database, the parse error returns (on any database backup i use, even 7 months back).

I have renamed the index in order to post an html page indicating the forums are down.  The new name is listed below.  I will also attach the offending file.  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!!!

Error notice:

Template Parse Error!
There was a problem loading the /home/content/d/p/y/dpylant/html/myjapanesegarden.org/talk/Themes/default/index.template.php template or language file. Please check the syntax and try again - remember, single quotes (') often have to be escaped with a slash (\). To see more specific error information from PHP, try accessing the file directly.

You may want to try to refresh this page or use the default theme.

You do have a backup of your file before your edit, right? :P

If you don't, please tell us what you have been doing and attach the file to your next post.

It is attached, mate. ;)

Can't see anything wrong, myself.

What, exactly, were you doing, when everything went weird, dpylant?

dpylant

Tried to add a flash ad to the area below the date under user welcome.  As soon as it didnt work, i undid what i added, but the error wont go away - even after reloading the files from a good backup.  Somehow it is linked to the database even though i am using database backups from way before the error.  Very strange.

margarett

Ups :P

Your file works in my test forum, as far as I've tested... Are you sure it's the right one?
Where does the error triggers? Looking at board index, inside a topic, ....?
Can you try to access PHP logs to get us a line number?

sounds like you are using some type of ad mod and the error is coming from that mod? if so you should ask for support in the mods support thread.

dpylant

No unfortunately it was me messing in the template code - no mod.  Can i access the php logs via FTP or Dreamweaver?  I cannot get to the admin pages.

margarett

You can access SMF error logs via phpmyadmin, table "smf_log_errors". The latest logs are the ones we're looking for.

PHP logs, maybe... Maybe in your FTP root there are some "core dump" files or "error" files that you can fetch. But this depends on the host configuration...

phpmyadmin has to be run on the server (you access it via browser).

Or, are you your own host?

I found it in GoDaddy, went into the database/ tables but no smf_log_errors that i can find.

margarett

Maybe another prefix? (other than "smf_")

Out of 47 tables, not one has the word error or errors.

That's interesting, there should be 63 tables in a base 2.0 install.

Illori

is there an arrow at the bottom of the page to move to page 2?

dpylant

no. this is what mine looks like.

margarett

That database is NOT from SMF ;)

That looks like the database from a Gallery 2 installation, it's not an SMF database.

dpylant

Will this do it?  I dont see anything relevant.

dpylant

If i am able to access the site via adding ?theme=2, does that help?
