Hotrats

apologies in advance, I just don't get it ...

when I go look in the package section I can't seem to find a youtube embeder that indicates support for 1.1.19 ... what should I do ?!

I've tried a few that succesfully install, but when I get in there I can't seem to know how to make it work ... can someone recommend something simple and also instructions for embeding the code please ?!

I'm not sure if it's because my SMF is too advanced for the package/plugin or I'm just too code illiterate to figure it out ...

ALSO, out of curiosity, is there a way to have my videos not go thru YT ?!
like run internally from my own server ...

I'm eternally challenged at this stuff // TIA

---

.ps .... otherwise my forum is running great and am enjoying the experience (since 2009 !!!)

At least AEVA and SAVE do work in 1.1.19. How to work with those it's totally different issue.

If you just want t embed videos, maybe SAVE is more suited (as AEVA has also gallery). Then you can read its support topic and ask there your questions

Hotrats

thanks for the reply ...

I tried Aeva and it installed ok
but writing a youtube URL left a big whole inside my posts
with nothing in 'em ... couldn't figure out how to make stuff appear

about WAVE ... when I select 1.1.19 there's a "parse" button
that shows up, hitting that takes me to a page with a bunch of
file edit comands ...

is this right ...?
seems complicated

---

(ed.) dang ... I just found the zipfile link above that // is this one-size-fits all ?? ... don't get it ... also, where are the instructions for using these plugins ... ?

margarett

You just need the parse instructions if you have errors while installing the MOD.

So, just grab the file, throw it into your package manager, install it and there 'ya go ;)

Hotrats

thank-you for the valuable confirmation ...

so, I did just what you said ... and it seems to install properly
now to get youtube vids to show up
shouldn't there be a special icon or something to "embed"
the youtube URL ... ?!

or do I just type the URL as I would any other text
the plugin doesn't seem to do anything

where would I find a "manual" for this plugin ?!
apologies for my daftness

margarett

AFAIR, you just need to paste the link and it will embed it.

This is why we say: mod questions should go into their support topic ;) I never used it, myself...

I thought this was a forum software issue ... thanks
my apologies

---

btw, I'm curious now
is this considered a good mod to use ?! or not ?!
if you don't use it what would you recommend ?!

many thanks for answering my newb questions

Sorry, Hotty. This seems to have been missed. :(

If you read the mod's support topic, you'll get an idea of what problems people have had. Trouble, with that, is that not so many people bother to post, there, if they think the thing's great!

Hotrats

I appreciate the attention ...

when I started my forum in 2009 I had a youtube embedder that worked fine // I forget what it was called ... one day, it stopped working

I tried abunch of  what was available in the mod pages, and nothing worked ... I gave up and ignored it

recently, I thought I'd give it a go ... I wen to the support page for Aeva and have NO idea what folks there are talking about // sounds like a bunch of conjectures right left and center to me ... no clear concise route it seems

almost, like there's no support at all for the thing ...

---

I can see that this technology is quite complicated if you're not an php trained person, or the like ... I thought you guys would know a simple fix, by toggling an option on the SMF side of the forum ... and I'd assume everybody is using the same mods

I guess, maybe that is just not so ... y'all write your own code for this, right ?!

I think I'll just satisfy myself to posting links to videos
and leave it at that

... many thanks again
HR

Hotrats

thx, I appreciate a suggestion like this ...

quick question, just to make sure I'm not even more lost than I think I am ...

when I go to that page in the upper right
there's a link to a .tar file, and below it option to manually install

should I automatically assume this will work by simply dnloading the .tar file and installing, or is the later the proper thing to do ... I'm not sure how to tell which option applies to me

I'll try the only way I know and report back
thx

Hotrats

ok, that didn't work ...

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

Suki

That mod won't work with your SMF version as its only compatible with 2.0.

Your best shot would be using this mod:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=936

Since thats the only mod that is still compatible with SMF 1.1.x

Once installed, upgrade the regex, you can use the same regex I'm using on my mod, but the first step would be to install the mod.

Hotrats

I tried it ... doesn't work (so far)

what's the other part I need to change (regex) ??!

---

but, check this out ...

when I followed the info sheet following install, it lead me to this ...

deprecated ...?

---

after going in circles many times now,
the impression I'm getting is that YT vids is not an option for 1.1.19 ...

I would think this is a no-brainer for forum software
especially, since I had this going before

maybe it should part of the program instead of relying on unstable mods

and that's where I really question the whole thing about upgrading to newer versions ...
now it works, now it doesn't ...

---

there's just so many mods that imbed YT videos ... I musta tried them all already

I imagine there's gotta be hoards of people with this issue by now,
unless I'm missing something super obvious (to others)
curious ...

Suki

The part you're missing is that you're using an outdated version of SMF.

The vast majority of mods won't work with the SMF version you're using right now, that doesn't mean those mods are unstable or that there are hoards of people with this issue.

The deprecated label on the mod was just a label the mod author gave to it since the same mod author had a similar mod with other features (AEVA).

It is a no-brainer... I have a mod that work just fine... but it only works for the current SMF version which is 2.0.

You had this before and ever since, youtube made some changes to the way they urls work, hence my comment about updating the regex.

Now, saying "doesn't work"  does not really help, at all.  Did you have any errors during the install?  what happen when you try to put a youtube url?

You gotta give more details.

Hotrats

it said it installed successfully ...

the [youtube] button is working in my post edit windows
but when I post all I get is an empty space

if I change the url of the YT vid to https
I get an invalid YT link error message
so something is working ... or seems to

I can't see any specific option menu for this mod
so, not sure if there's anything I can toggle randomly

as far as running 1.1.19 goes
I thought this had been discussed somewhere in my questions

version2 was, as far as I know, still in beta test mode
for programmers ...
and the original 1.1.... was still ebing continued as it was more solid and established

I could be wrong about this ...

so, I guess you'd recommend I change to 2.0 ...
and kinda start from scratch, re-establishing a new theme
I can't imagine the DK Theme : deruni style I'm using would
work there ...

problem is I'm so busy with work and design stuff, it's hard enough
to keep up with all of it, not mention running an earhtquake simulation
on my whole platform ...

yikes!! ... the thought ...

---

unless anybody can add $0.02 to fix my YT issue
I may well start spending bits of spare time preparing to migrate over

dang ...

kat

2.1 is due out, sometime...

(Just thought I'd throw that spanner into the works). ;)

The problem is, Google keep messing around with YouTube. The settings and things that work, now, might not, tomorrow.

Might be best to forget about embedding, totally, and just put a link to the YouTube page...
