Having used YABBSE for 2 years and upgrading to SMF a few days ago, I have to say it's spot on.

Faster, the membergroups and board permissions are what I always wanted. Along with many other qualities that I won't bore you with.

I look forward to further developments and perhaps an easy template editor.

To those that are worrying about changing from 1.5.5, just do it, YABBSE is no longer supported this is the way forward.

Cheers

Agreed - I just had a play with adding some new options to the profiles, and I couldn't believe how easy it was. No database modifications needed or anything!

The template system may be a bit complicated for just changing a bit of HTML, but it makes adding extra functionality so much easier.

I'll go ahead and say thanks from the SMF team.  ;)

Everyone has worked hard and well on this project and it's paying off with what I would already consider a very strong product (even in the beta stages at this point) and it has quite a bright future. The software is already beginning to distance itself IMHO. It's backed by a very solid and friendly development team.

Permissions in SMF are a dream .. I had to RIP up a mod for yabbse to allow some more post based membergroups and as a total newb it took me forever.

SMF system includes numerous mods that i can remember (stars mod, membergroups mod .. so on and so forth) as well as features we only dreamed off .

Agreed, the very few who complain about SMF have obviously never been on the train wreck known as YaBB 1.3.1.

SMF is the Bomb!

i agree. smf is second to none. we had our board for 14 months, the latest version being yabb gold. we had, unfortunately done quite a bit of mods on it, and couldnt convert to smf. we let our members vote on whether to stay with yabb or start fresh with smf. we did a fresh install and everyone re-registered. we've not regretted it for a moment. membership has been up and more active and everyone is happy. nobody has had one complaint. thanks smf

Ditto.  I had doubts about YABBSE/SMF before since phpbb was more well-known and more widely used by people I know.  But ever since I installed YABBSE a couple of months ago, and recently converted to SMF, I've fallen in love with the intuitive interface and great features.

only thing i wish for, which i know would never happen, is a converter to switch from a remotely hosted board to smf. it would be perfect if you could enter the url of your board (i have one with proboards) and admin username and pass, and have it install smf on your server and convert all the data on your other board into an smf board. that i would love (i have a board with over 100,000 posts and 600+ members).

I'm using beta 5 as a replacement for a YaBB gold board, and this is such a gigantic improvement I don't even know where to begin.  I've noticed almost no problems (and the ones I did spot were with beta 4 which I only ran for a day before the beta 5 upgrade came out).  I can't say I have any complaints, and I'm really happy so far.  Happy to be a charter member and support a fine product like this.

I forced my members to re-register (my old board had gotten fairly corrupted the last month it was up) and none of them miss the old software, and they all love the increased speed and flexability.  I wish I had the free time to do a new template for it, but I'm sure once the first official release is made, there will be some cool ones to choose from.
Running SMF since May '04.  Started with YaBB on Oct 2001.

There are already several templates for SMF. Check out the Graphics/Themes category.

I agree with everything said in this thread. SMF is just perfect. :)

If it wasn't for some poor sod hacking my board ages ago I would have upgraded to every version and variation starting from 1.0.0, including YaPP, PfaBB and Enigma! Oh well, can't have everything. :)

But again, great job by the whole team.
