Hi I'm using joomla 1.1.12 and SMFbridge 1.7

I've noticed though you can logon through SMF and appear logged onto Joomla ie the login module in joomla shows you logged on, you aren't infacted logged on.

registered member only modules don't become active, and members don't appear in the joomla activity log.

So is there a way to either make this work or disable the SMF login so members have to use the joomla login, which also logs them onto SMF?

yes...   edit your SMF theme to remove/comment out/conditional out that section of the theme index.template.php file.
