Because you're talking about wasting bandwidth and then saying it would be easier to just click the links and read the topics themselves, which in turn would use up even more bandwidth/resources.

Thats just total and utterly BS. You obviously just jot down any argument to make a point - which isn't even valid in this case.

It's a completely valid point. I added the topic previews to my new themes before this thread was even created and I came across this topic and thought I would express myself here. You obviously are too damned hard headed and stuck in your own ways to listen to anyone else other than the voice in your f***ing head. The feature in question here is just another feature on a long and growing list of features that smf lacks and wont add because they deem it bloat and give bulls*** excuses like "hogging resources" for why they wont add it expecting us to eat it up because we don't know any better. I'm far from being a noob and where I lack in programming, I've got friends that can more than enough pull up my slack in that department. My point in saying that is don't feed me bulls*** and expect me to believe it.

I'd much rather have 2 seconds to click on a link than hover over the thread title for 7 seconds and wait for a tooltip. And I'm sure most other users would do the same. These days people just want stuff fast, and they're not gonna hang around even for 5 seconds just to see the first line (or whatever) of a thread.

If you have the feature on your forum, then okay, whatever, but just because you want it does not mean that everyone else does, as you can see, there are people who dont want it. If you want to release a mod for it so that those that do want it go ahead.

Again, a lazy ass way out. You make fun of phpbb because "they rely on the community to add any great features" and yet you do the same here. It barely takes 1-2 seconds for the text to show up. I guess none of you really see it's uses right now because it's not something you've used before or are used to, but it's used and liked alot in the vB community and any other board developers smart enough to use it. If you want it to be of choice, then give it an on/off switch in the admincp somewhere.

Gee, i wonder why SMF is so popular..according to you, the team are so useless that SMF couldn't possibly have come this far on merit. Must be pure luck then.

You may say I am hardheaded or whatever, but there is really just one thing that really irritates me - and thats people who already have the answer to everything, won't listen to reason and don't respect others to actually know what they are doing. Sadly you exhibited those qualities many times.

m3talc0re

That's just a damn lie and more over basically describes yourself. As for the first part of your post, the answer to that is because of the alternatives to smf aren't very good either, not yet anyway...

Then why are you describing SMF team the way you do/have done here?

As for myself, lol..I couldn't care less what you think or not :), but I am not going to pollute this topic with verbal fights any more. Not fair to topic starter.

Wow FLAME WAR.......lol.....Personally It should be added because the people that want it will use it and if you do not feel like hovering over it which seems lazy to me then just don't use it....wow really hard guyz....

To add my personal opinion, I also think that this should be added as a default feature. Of course it should be selectable (preferably in the user profile, so every user can choose themselves whether they need it or not), as not everyone will want it, but there is a need for it.

Sure it will increase the bandwidth (obviously), but as I personally use topic previews on other forums that support it, I still think it should be added as a selectable feature. And if the topic previews make you decide not to click on a a topic or two (as they are of no interest to you), that quickly makes up for the increased bandwidth on the board index.

realdeal

Yea. The selectable feature in your profile would be nice... But also, in the admin panel, select if you want it off completely.

m3talc0re

The bandwidth it'd use is negligable.. What, like 100 bytes at best?

Temp ban me for my "language"... pfft. And as Daniel stated, what little bitty ammount of bandwidth it does use it, it's made up for.

Daniel Hofverberg

Surely the bandwidth must be much more than 100 bytes for a board index, considering the text from all the topics that must be fetched and saved. But of course that would vary depending on how much from each topic were to be used as tooltips.

But regardless of how much bandwidth it uses, it's still made up for if the tooltips made you decide that a topic is irrelevant, so you don't have to load the entire topic.

But as realdeal stated, such a feature should definitely be admin selectable; and should also be selectable in each user's profile - after all, people that don't read tooltips don't have any benefits of the increased bandwidth.

m3talc0re

The preview isn't a full post put into a title="", it's just the first so many characters. See link:
http://m3talc0re.com/smfboard/index.php?board=1.0

Hover your mouse over MKPortal or The New Ancient theme topics and you'll see the sentences get cut off after so many characters. Even on a full forum "Board Index > Message Index", the amount of text that would be added would be the equivalent of a small paragraph. That's not enough bandwidth for even dialup users to care about.

Doing it with a tooltip is pointless, for most people they take a while to show up and some browsers only show a few words anyway. If it's done might as well use javascript like this http://www.sixcrazyminutes.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=2
Liverpool FC Forum with 14 million+ posts.

m3talc0re

They're not pointless. It also has it's benefits vs that fugly js crap...
