Resize big attached images

We've all seen them... people who upload the originals from their cameras.. 3 MB 3000x2000 pixels.... woop-de-do. There goes your hosting space, now just sit back for 5 minutes and see your transfer go as well

This mod was heaven sent: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=65340.0 - sadly it doesn't seem to be maintained nor updated to 1.1 RC3

From what I understand, the basic functionality needed here is already in SMF as it is used to resize avatars. From looking at this function I would assume it's a very quick job for an experienced mod-maker. Any takers?

I guess anyone making a request here would like to see their requested functionality be core - so I'll turn it around and ask for a good reason why this is not implemented per default, as the function is already written, right?
