Table doesn't exist error

SMF Version: SMF 1.0.10
I am trying to upgrade from 1.0.10 to the latest 1.1.1 and i keep getting this error:

Upgrading log system...
done.
    Cleaning up old log indexes... done.
Successful.
Making SMF MySQL strict compatible...
    Preparing messages table for strict upgrade done.
    Adjusting text fields done.
Unsuccessful!

This query:
UPDATE smf_membergroups
SET stars = ''
WHERE stars IS NULL;
Caused the error:
Table 'smf111test.smf_membergroups' doesn't exist



any suggestion on how to get past this please?

Can you use phpmyadmin and tell me if the table smf_membergroups exists?

What is phpMyAdmin?
