Completely confused by all the version numbers and faq threads

I'm trying to get everything working using this bridge, but I'm completely confused by the plethora of version numbers thrown around in all the install readmes and faqs.  I just need a little clarification.

I have a fresh install of Joomla 1.0.12 and SMF 1.1.2 from the official download sites.  I downloaded the "SMF 1.1 Mambo 4.6 Bridge 1.1 RC2" from the official download site at SMF.

Where I am getting confused is that the readme in the forums mentions version 1.1.7, Mambo 4.6, etc. and now I'm lost.  I've always used PHPNuke in the past so I have no experience with any of these new applications - but I've gathered enough that Mambo and Joomla are based off the same code, or something to that effect.

Also, I'm confused by the install that comes with the bridge because it mentions Mambo installation which doesn't directly translate to the same commands in the Joomla admin location, apparently.  On the other hand, the readme here in the forums says, specifically:

QuoteSTART:

First, unzip the Bridge ZIP file

This will extract to create threefiles.
com_smf.zip
readme.html
leggimi.html (the readme in Italian)

For new installs:

Unzip the package, read the readme.html, and install the com_smf.zip as a component.

For Joomla, you will not need to add code to your template anymore.

In the zip I downloaded from the bridges section at SMF there is 35 files or so plus a "Language" directory with even more files - and nowhere can I find the "com_smf.zip" file.

So you can see where I'm getting confused.  Is there a post somewhere that can clear this all up or can someone hit me with a few words of wisdom, please?  I'm pretty savvy with web development, so you can assume I'll understand instructions above the average newbie.

Thanks in advance to any help offered.

The bridge you downloaded is for Mambo, not for Joomla.

The readme in the joomla section (here) clearly indicates that the current version of the bridge for Joomla is 1.1.7. All instructions for joomla are laid out in the combined readme thread.

Remember, if the program you attempt to install does not match the instructions, then you obviously do not have the same program described in the instructions. :)

Oop. Missed that. Maybe you should do something about your stickies regarding this subject as it doesn't exist anymore. Just a thought.
