Using your FTP Program, you need to CHMOD the smilies directory to 777 or 755.

I use smf 1.1.2 and Tiny portal and cuteftp on a host server AQhost

can you tell me what else i might try or how specifically to try what you suggest please?

...because i don't know those terms i am a neophyte .


I have ftp'd a new set of smileys to my forum smilies directory
and i can figure out all the prompts but the
writable has me confused

Right click on the particular smily file in your FTP, select permissions, there you are, change the numbers.

Ok thanks for the replies very much but when I click the images as instructed each one is already at 777 and appears writable .

write .........../......../......../
execute......./......../......../

So I think that I need to do something else .
Any ideas please ?

Check all 9 boxes and the CHMOD will then be 777.

Thank you all for your replies . Forgive me ,perhaps I was not clear . All the gif files are already at 777
there is a box on Cuteftp that allows the manual typing of 766 or 755 or 777 etc
but all the boxes are already ticked and the numeral is already 777
so I must have another problem .
Any ideas .

You need to CHMOD the actual directories themselves, not the GIF files contained within.

There is a red texted title Absolute path to all smiley sets:

Do you think that the path is incorrect ? I am new to this and I did not set up the forum . The member who set is no longer available . He could not figure out how to add custom smileys but I have always wanted them on a popup window .

The problem is not permissions then.
The path to my smilies is:

/public_html/forum/Smileys/classic Any new smilie I ad goes there. I find adding new smilies tricky, you must add them in the forum, add them in the FTP and upload somehow.
But I've always got my new smilies up!

If I was you I would simplify the path to your smilies, is it just me or does that path not look right?

I did not set the SMF up and I am not sure where to change settings safely .

The Smileys and Message Icons Settings  looks like this :

Default Smiley Set Default
Enable Smiley Set selection by members        /

Enable customized smileys:
(otherwise, the default smileys will be used.) /

Base URL to all smiley sets: http://forums.riverofenlightenment.com/Smileys    
Absolute path to all smiley sets:
/chroot/home/riverofe/riverofenlightenment.com/html/forums/Smileys

but I changed this according to your suggestion
but do I need to change it somewhere else too ?

The domain is

but the forums are here ;
http://forums.riverofenlightenment.com
the base url is listed in the Smileys as ;
http://forums.riverofenlightenment.com/Smileys
but that does not make sense to me
I think it should be
http://forums.riverofenlightenment.com/forums/Smileys
but I am getting real confused
What do you suggest ?

That's my absolute path.

Try repair_settings.php, it may fix your problem:
http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?tools

And I should have said: "don't change anything without knowing why"

I thank you for your reply , I am afraid to try repair_settings
everything is finally working except the smileys directory is not writeable
I would hate to lose what I have already sorted out .
Are there other ideas on how to add smileys?
