number of news items - feasible maximum?

just wondering if there's any guidelines for the maximum number of news items you think you should have...?

at the moment i've got about 20 as i use it randomly in the fader to show interesting site features and links and stuff.  would it have too much bloat if there were say 100... 1000 in there?  i know it'd be difficult to manage, but just wondering.

If you use it to show important information I would limit it because you have to make sure everybody sees it then.
But if you use it to show "interesting" stuff you can add as many as you like.
