Add a home page

Most sites have a home page, with news type blog things in the middle and user logins and stuff with a link to the forums. How do I do that with smf?

There are various method's to do this, one i know is Joomla. If you look it up with google you will be able to find some more information.

You could use something like the the Custom Action Mod or Tiny Portal or various other ways.

It just depends on what you want to do and your knowledge level etc.
