Just installed onto a brand new fresh data base Version 1.1.1. ( Because that was the newest version my hosting service had ) Then went into the admin center and updated per instructions to version 1.1.3.  Then FTP over everything to 1.1.3. from my computer except settings.php and settings_bak.php  from my old complete board version 1.0.8. to 1.1.3. because I searched and that is what someone said to do. I can't log on as admin, and none of the topics or old board appears regardless of the new/ old passwords. Should I just jump off a cliff now and save time  :-[

First you installed the 1.1.1 and then upgraded to 1.1.3. Until now I get it, but the rest I didn''t.
Can you be a bit more specific? What did you ftp-ed to your 1.1.3 version? Was it the forum files of a 1.0.8 version?

If you were looking to upgrade your 1.0.8. version, then you needed the large 1.1.3 upgrade package.

P.s. Where is the post that you searched and saw that someone had said that you should have done whatever it is that you did?

boardgirls

YES !!! YES !!!  You got my confusion correct thank Gawd ... I searched on this fourm for 1.0.8. to 1.1.1. is how I found the " don't upload setting.php etc. "  Never the less, I have a full backup of my 1.0.8  //// And I could completly redo if needed. I FTP over my 1.0.8. to 1.1.3. EXCEPT ( 2 ) FILES = SETTINGS.PHP AND SETTINGS_BAK.PHP ???  Any Hope, thanks for reading into the detail to understand :)

Here it is what you should do.

First of all install a 1.0.11 version and restore your database ( there is no change in the database between the different versions within the same series. And what is more, if the upgrade won''t work, then you are left with a stable version. As 1.0.11 is the last of the 1.0 series and is still supported as far as I know.)  and then upgrade it to 1.1.3.

To upgrade do the following:

1. Download the large 1.1.3 upgrade package to your pc and unzip it.
2. Log in to your ftp client and upload all of its contents to the directory where your smf files are
3. Open your favorite browser and point it to the upgrade.php file. i.e. www.yoursite.com/forum-path/upgrade.php
Note. If your forum files are in the root directory, then you should point your browser to www.yoursite.com/upgrade.php instead
4. Delete the upgrade.php file after you are done, which it will be depending on the size of your forum, internet connection speed etc.

Assuming that everything went smooth, now your forum should be upgraded to the latest version. Hope it helps

Let me clarify, sorry for the confusion. I started with a brand new fresh version fully installed 1.1.3  I then attempted to merge my old fully functional version with craps loads of data Version 1.0.8 by FTPing everything to the new root directory of the 1.1.3. new version. The only files I did not send over was settings.php and settings.bak.php does that help?

It was totally wrong what you did. You can''t restore a database as well from 1.0 series to the 1.1. series, in case the thought crossed your mind to try that too, as your next move.

If you want to upgrade your forum to the newest version, then the above mentioned steps are the way to go

It wont work. Since you didnt updated the Database. Download a Large upgrade pack. Upgrade its file and run Upgrade.php

babjusi came first :P

Wait; I did create a brand new data base V- 1.1.3. in a virgin state. Nothing else. I then attempted to load my 1.0.8 from my computer. I ftp every file from my computer except settings_.php and settings_bak.php if that helps?

I don''t want to sound rude, but how many times do we have to tell you that what you tried to do was totally wrong and won''t work?

O.K. , if the virgin data base starts with V 1.1.1. untouched and pure, what would be the steps?

O.k. , from my hosting account they have version 1.1.1.  I can start from there and go to admin and upgrade to 1.1.3 and that would be a stopping point all is great. I have a full blown forum saved in " MY Computer " loaded version 1.0.8  How do I merge the two if that helps? Thanks for your efforts I think if we can get on the same page this will roll ... My Bad

You will have to install manually a a 1.0.11 version and restore your database ( there is no change in the database between the different versions within the same series.
