curve theme question on images

Love curve and have been trying to make my first theme for it and am getting used to the large image file, a little different but nice.  Now the questions are, how could I add piping to the edge of the theme? I am having some issues finding out which image in particular I need to edit and whether or not it would actually work.  My other question is what are the matte images for?
