Sub forum by invite only

Hi,
How do I alter member permissions to include a sub forum with a membership by invite?  I am hopoing there is a method using the member login.

if you make a member group with permission to view that board you can manually assign that group to the member(s), I dont know a way to "invite" people to join a group in 1.1.12, in 2.0 you can have members apply to join member groups.

The method that Illori mentioned is a good way to do it.  Using the membergroups and permissions you can come up with endless combinations that allow you to create lots of custom groups.
