if i download simple machines can i get a portal to go with it, if so from where and is it free. and are there any demos

By a portal, do you mean a content management system like Mamboserver? You can go to the mambo site at http://mamboserver.com/ and download it, and then use mambo bridge to have both SMF and MOS (mamboserver).  The bridge info is at http://mamboforge.net/projects/mambo-smf/

Oh, this would also be helpful as it includes the installation details - http://www.mambohacks.com/ (this assumes MOS has already been installed and you are then installing SMF)
