Here are my reasons:1. SMF has a strong support community. SMF lifts you up when you feel down. 2. SMF updates the software all year round. What is your thought?3.4.5.

Gary

Glad to see that you'll be sticking with SMF. :D

SMF was the first forum software I have ever tried.

I first heard about SMF when I got hosting service at godaddy.com
Godaddy had a option to install it and I did.

SMF has been able to do everything I have wanted and the community here is awesome!

I have no reason to try or even look at other forum software and don't think I will ever need to.

SMF is amazing.... :)

No better forum software that I've heard of. :)

I can't agree more :)  SMF does have a very strong support community.

I have noticed you helping out as well.  Thank you :)

The only woe of mine is that it isnt licensed under the GPL. If they dont want people taking their work fine, then license it under CC or Apache.

Apart from that, its all good :)

I can't technically say "for life" as there are a few exceptions that would turn me away from it...

1. It goes paid. - I don't see this as realistically happening, but if it were to go paid, I would no longer stick with it. I would be more than happy to actually pay for the (quality of the) software itself, but it's been said so many times that it won't go paid that if it did indeed go paid, I'd immediately lose respect and trust in the people behind the project (and the community). That's enough of a reason for me not to stick with it and to include this as an exception for the "for life" sentiment.

2. If it ever stops being developed. - This is a "no-brainer" as to why anyone would not stick with it, but I think it has to be included as an exception for the "for life" sentiment.

Other than those two (unrealistic, IMO) exceptions, I will stick with it. I really like (more than the competition) just about everything about it; the community here (especially how the staff, specifically the developers, are so involved and willing to get feedback, input, etc.), the software (very generally - many different things about it), etc. I, almost just as importantly, similarly like some of the bigger mods - SMF Arcade, TinyPortal, to name a few - which more than suffice for my needs / wants.

It won't happen.  If it did, a good chunk of the team would be right behind you in walking away

I've read it many times: the pillars of SMF will continue to give away this software free of charge. I have no doubt about their commitment to the open source community.

I like smf for everything. The defult theme could be better but thats about it :)

As that saying goes, ''Never say never''. I mean, I don''t think that smf will go paid either, but a lot of companies/softwares or whatever, have said with clam that they will will never go paid and when the time came they all went paid. My point is, that ''Never say never'' ;)

Personally I will always support smf if it goes paid, remains free or whatever

If this was addressed to me, then thank YOU.
I am always happy to help when I can (just my nature I guess) and I really love the SMF software. :)

Can we please let this die? It's annoying every time it is brought up, and it's already been discussed to death.

SMF is the first forum software I've used also, and I don't intend to use another.

It has amazing support, and an equally amazing community.  It's not hard to understand what all the coding does, and it is done in a really clean/easy to read manner.

You can pretty much customize every file with just a basic html/php/sql knowledge.

I used to use IPB on InvisionFree before I found out about SMF. When I deployed my first ever home web server, I decided to give SMF a try with it, and haven't left it since. That was a year and a half ago.
