Other then the $50 to become a Charter Member there has been one thing holding me back. I do not really want to use SMF only as a message board. I plan to do some extreme modding. This is an honest question that whomever answer will not be held accountable for. Here is the question:
What areas of SMF do you believe it is safe to modify? Realizing that whatever mods I do will have to be done again which areas of SMF do you think the functionality will be enough the same that I can able the same patch or mod? This is not to say the file won't change just the functionality.

I would not do any modding before a public release.  You may be lucky that some parts may not change but if it touches more than one or two files I wouldn't want to spend the time now and re-do it.  Unknown can probabally give you the most solid answer but I know I am not modding anything yet, especially with my biggest "mod" being to make SMF useable for Boardnation.

That is what I feared... but I just got a nice Christmas bonus and had an extra $50. Since I don't have the website up yet that will run SMF there is no reason to become a charter member because I couldn't use it. Thanks for the answer, I guess I will just wait until a public release. Perhaps if I pray it will come faster...

Heh.  Well, there's some modifying you can do without touching anything... and there's some you can't.  It's always like that, really....

But, yes, I would recommend waiting until public.... although if that money is REALLY burning a hole in your pocket, you could at least get a feel for the new code...

As Unknown said, getting a feel for the code would be a good thing to do.  While lines may change, even some functions added or removed (severly altered), the bulk of the code and especially its flow from function to function should not really change.

Well it is not as though the money does not have uses like christmas. I just have a project I am holding off on because I decided to use SMF. It will be the only webpage I will have made for personal enjoyment and not work or somebody else so I am excited to get started on it. This would have been my chirstmas present to myself. BTW I am a code junky. I am a programmer at heart and love to do it. Some might even call it a fetish or an obsession. If I still have the money after the first release (and to be honest I am happy with SMF) I will become a charter member.
