We are running SMF 1.1.6.

Admin -> Forum -> Avatars and Attachments -> External Avatars are set to:

  • Membergroups allowed to select an external URL: all of them
  • Download avatar at given URL: unchecked
  • Maximum width external avatar: 101
  • Maximum height external avatar: 101
  • If the avatar is too large: let the HTML resize it

The problem is that the HTML resizes every avatar to 101x101, even if the avatar is smaller than that.

Is there a way around this?

Fiery

Hello,

That is odd.  Try different settings for "If the avatar is too large"

Beleth

But I don't want any of the other settings.  Refusing it is draconian; downloading it is not an option, as disk space on my site is at a premium; and forcing my users to enable JavaScript just to see an avatar is out of the question.

The HTML option is the best choice by far for me.  I just want it to work as advertised.

Unset the max size is the only other solution I can think of.

Although I would generally recommend using javascript to resize it on view. (although it will still show the avatar if javascript is enabled)

Beleth

I'll try turning Javascript on and see if folks raise a fuss.
Thank you, Karl!

Meanwhile, is there a bug database I can enter this into?

karlbenson

I don't think this is a bug.

However I will move this topic to bug reports to see if anyone else does.

the html resizing always has done this. It is just adding a height and width tag to the image tag.

If it is behaving as intended, then describing the settings as "maximum height" and "maximum width" is misleading.

It should either add height and width tags only to avatars which are bigger than what the settings are, or the setting descriptions should be renamed to "forced height" and "forced width" (or similar) on the External Avatars page.
