Repair tool doesn\'t work

Hi there,

I had problems with the smileys sets showing up as text instead of icons. I did the database mod and whole lot of other things but I keep coming back to the same problem.

Eventually I downloaded the repair settings tool and uploaded it to my root and CHMOD it to 777. When I then run it I get the following message:-

Settings.php cannot be written to by your webserver. Please modify the permissions on this file to allow write access.

I log in to the server to check the file permission which shows up correctly as 777 and yet I get the same message when I try to run the tool, everytime. I made sure it was uploaded using ASCII and not binary.

Now this is the first time I had downloaded SMF1.1.7 and ran the installer. So basically it's a clean install and not on top of previous versions or upgrades. I've more or less read almost everything here regarding smileys not showing up and tried various things and the repair tool is my last option left to try.

Any ideas?

the Settings.php in SMF root folder must be writeable when using repair_settings.php.. change it    
temporarily to CHMOD 777.

Which is exactly what the server is saying and not repair_settings!!!! What a dolt...

How embrassing.....
