it took me very little time to find something to confuse me - lol.
maybe i'm getting senile  :(

it says early on in the posted instructions that mambo and smf should already be installed as standalones but then follows with-
- SMF and Mambo should be installed in the same MySQL database.

i've installed alot of standalone progs that utilize mysql databases but never had 2 standalones share 1 database........if i installed them origianally as standalones doesnt that neccesitate that they were installed with their own, seperate, databases ?

tia for any assistance in clearing up my confusion.

Well, 2 programs can be in the same database without really conflicting with each other, just like two programs can be installed on the same computer.

No.  Just because they keep their data in the same database doesn't mean that they interact on any level.

Some hosting packages only offer one database, yet you can still have several stand-alone applications storing data in the one database.

As long as the table prefixes are unique for each application, there is no conflict, and not necessarily interaction.

ok - so let me see if i have this right.
i now need to uninstall the standalones, or at least one of them, and reinstall it but this time choosing the database (for installation) of the other.
eg. i'd nuke my smf installation then reinstall it but this time pointing the installation script to use the mambo mysql database ?

btw, i didnt really mean to make a new thread on this - i was trying to just add a reply in the other thread but must have hit the wrong button.

You can do it that way.  Another option would be to export the SMF database to a file on your computer, and then import it into your Mambo database, and then just change the database info in the SMF admin panel.

I split it to keep the combined readme at least somewhat on-topic.  It's better if you are seeking help or advice to post a new topic.  ;)
