thanks for the tip, it pointed me in the right direction

I'm using cpanel with cron jobs, and don't know enough to risk fiddling, so I checked with a froend and came up with this:

find /home/my account/public_html/smfsubfolder -name "core.*" -exec rm -f {} \;

my smf is in a subfolder, so I put in the full path and it works great....
