Some Questions Prior to Conversion

I'm planning to convert a small phpBB 3 forum to SMF (convert to version 1.x and then upgrade to version 2.0) and I have a couple of questions. I've read the documentation and had a look through the threads here, but there some things I was wondering about.

1. Does the conversion process touch the old phpBB 3 forum? For example if the conversion is unsuccessful, is one able to return to one's previous installation?

2. Is it advisable to use an automated installation process like SimpleScripts to install SMF or should this be done by hand?

Apologies if I've posted this in the wrong spot or missed something obvious in the documentation.

1) no, your phpBB will not be modified .. The converter copies over the content from your phpBB to SMF during conversion.

2) yes, it's better to install SMF manually. Installation isn't complicated:

I did back everything up, just in case.

The conversion was most successful. Very straightforward and super easy. As was the subsequent upgrade to 2.0 RC whatever-it-is.

Not to disparage phpBB but I'm very pleased with SMF.

I want to move a PHPBB3 forum and all its categories, posts, permissions, members, etc keeping it all intact, to a SMF forum.

I have the following setup:

www.domain.com/phpbb3 (current board)

www.domain.com/smf (fresh install)

Seems like it may be a good one to convert the board, but I am pretty busy right now would prefer ideally someone who has done this before.
