In version "SMF 2.0 RC1.2", to send a PM, Mods and above can just click the name and 'send a personal messege' on the profile.  Regular members are restricted from seeing everyones profile and so can't do this.  Regular members can click the little online/offline box to send a PM.

My questions is, can a clarification be added to this (something like "click here to send PM") above or under the online/offline box?

If you look below your gender/postcount, there is a little icon that looks like this

That is the PM User icon. Just click that or hover over it and it will say "Private Message (Online/Offline)"

I haven't noticed that on my board, but I'll certainly look into it.  Thanks Jingle.  It would still be nice if it said something like "click here to send PM" or something.

The small icons are made that way for a reason...to make it compact. If you hover over that icon, it should say Personal Message.
