Regardless of what I put in the two "Path" boxes in the first step (whether they are real paths or not) I always get
"Successful.
Recalculating forum statistics... Successful."
on the following page.

Can't seem to locate a log or any other means of diagnosing this, where do I start?

That's a little unexpected. Perhaps you could make sure you clear all cookies, and write in your browser's address bar the URL of convert.php, with no parameters whatsoever.

Then, eventually, tell what version of phpbb, and of SMF, you are using, and what converter package.
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.

Works! thank you.

It was a hxxp:session.save [nonactive]_path issue as stated on that page

I'm hosted on iPower.  For posterity's sake here is how you update the PHP.ini file through their control panel:

1) Go to Control Panel > CGI and Scripted Language Support > PHP Scripting
2) Edit your php.ini file here and set hxxp:session.save [nonactive]_path=<docroot>/cgi-bin/tmp
note <docroot> should be displayed on this page.

Thanks again, I'm off and running.
