so i went to my host, followed the directions to ftp , and all it did was tell me about ftp. is there any other way to run the repair ??

Tiribulus

I host myself so I don't really do it the way you are, but you would use ftp to put the repair.php file in the root directory for your forum. The main one where all the files and folders that make up
SMF are located. Then you put the address for your forum in your browser with the addition of /repair.php at the end of the address. So if your URL was http://www.mysite.com, you would put http://www.mysite.com/repair.php. That brings you the repair utility and that will easily let you check your paths and some other relevant stuff.

^^^ thanks i am getting closer but everytime i try to up load the repair.php file it cancels and says the upload canceled, also where exactly am i suposed to put the repair.php?

Tiribulus

It sounds like you need to change the permissions for the folder you're trying to upload to..., maybe, though you would think it would say something like that in the error. Somebody else will have to help you with using those host control panels for changing permissions. I've never even seen one. However the file goes in what's called the docroot. The topmost folder that contains the SMF installation. You'll see folders in there named themes, sources, packages, smileys and a few others. I imagine the control panel will tell you someplace where on your server that is for you too. Have no fear, there's always an answer. You'll get this squared away.

I got the repair php uploaded via FTP, but now my forum is saying

!!
MAJOR SECURITY RISK:
You have not removed repair_settings.php!

what am i supposed to do now?

Tiribulus

That's actually good for now. It means that the file is in the right place. Now put the address for your site in a browser adding /repair.php at the end like this:

http://yoursite.com/repair.php

If it happens to have folders in the address, still put the file name at the end. Example:

http://yoursite.com/forum/repair.php

You will get the repair utility page and it will tell you whether you have problems with your paths, which is probably what's the issue is.

OMG this is driving me nuts,
it keeps saying page not found when i put the forum name in a browser with /repair.php at the end.
