How is this board diffrent than PHPBB

Basically let me get to the point, I want to be able to deny anyone who clicks on memberlists to have that access. can I do that?

I also want to be able to control how many characters one is allowed to put in as username is this possible?

PHpbb does not allow this and people have abused this feature after I banned them. they send messages through username. it shows up in waiting but people can read the vulgar username.

1. Yes. SMF has a "View Memberlist" permission.
2. Yes. The default limit is 25 characters, but this is easy to change.

SMF does not have any functionality allowing you to email users directly through the board like phpBB does, but each user can choose whether or not to make their email address visible to others, and you can also hide all contact details from guests ("contact details" = email, ICQ number, AIM ScreenName, MSN Messenger address and YIM username).

Excellent...looks like I will be going to this board then. Like I said I have this troll that lives to harass anyone and everyone. I banned his dumb ass but he knows how to get his message across anyway using the user name box he leaves messages. you have to register and leave a desired name and it sits there until either I delete it but if I am gone for a day or so he can leave up to 5 requests to enter and leave messages on the username and that is why I want to limit it to maybe 3 letters. new people would read his username and 9 times out of 10 it is vulgar.
I do not want to allow anyone to view or contact the members list. only me.

You will love SMF's ban system - you can ban by hostname, IP address, email, etc., and you can use wildcards. Plus, you ban people from registering

Well that is the thing, I can do that too on the phpbb board. The major problem I had was that when the board was pulled up the "troll" would register and the name would appear on the "who's on line" box and it would show the username but this "troll" would leave vile messages for all to read in the username box and that is why I was asking if I could limit the characters amount as username? from lets say 25 characters to 3 letters?

Then he would go to member lists and everyone who was registered in the message board room would have their email by the members name and he would send vile crap about me to all the members. This dude is a troll and I don't care either but if I can limit the troll by him not able to leave a message nowhere and can't use the memberlist at all then I am going to this board and the troll will go away but if he has a way then he won't go away.

When he registers again I will leave a link to the board and you will see what I am talking about.

You can stop him or her from registering, and you can restrict what words can be used in the username.

Just disallow viewing contact details to guests, and he won't be able to.

I will open it up for you all to post something about this jerk and don't give out urls so he wont track me. you wont have to register either.. go to the rant and rave room, that will be the one I will open for all to post something about the troll then Ill close it up and piss him off so he cant respond.
