That's a hassle with your timeout setting.

If you have a word with your host, they can change it, for you.

If they whinge, tell them it's only temporary.

This explains, a bit.

After beeing in contact with my host, they claim that they can't change their php safemode setting to please my needs, which means that the upgrade progress times out.

Now, is it maybe possible to do the upgrade manually?

What a load of crap. Substitute "Can't", for "Won't" and you'll be nearer the truth.

Well, the database needs to be upgraded, too. So, there probably IS, but it could be a bit convoluted.

I'll have a look around, here, to see if I can find the details.

kat

Nope. Nothing in the docs....

I'll post in the Support Helpers board, to see if anyone has the details, somewhere.

Copying the actual files over, would be easy enough.

Not entirely certain about the database, though.

Small upgrade might do that. Best to check that, though, before going for it, just in case.

You HAVE backed-up, I assume?

kat

F.L.A.M.E.R. has a plan.  :)

If you get your .htaccess file, which'll be in the root of your forum (Where settings.php is), then add this line to it:

php_value safe_mode "1"

You might be lucky.

If not, showing your host this:

http://php.net/manual/en/features.safe-mode.php

might help them to understand what you need.

I tried it, but nothing changed :(. I guess it was a longshot.

I did show them exactly that page actually and they said are aware of that a lot of users want this disabled. They have a internal discussion on what to do with this in the future.

When answering my request to disable it for just me they argued that such a change would affect all their clients on the same server.

QuoteYou HAVE backed-up, I assume?

Yes I have a backup that I can restore. Right now I'm reading the upgrade.php file to try and see if I could do the halting steps manually. In the worst case scenario I'll just have to restore the backup, which I would need to do anyways.

Very nice of you to contact the support board, it feels like you are doing the things I am supposed to do :).

kat

Oh, it's no problem. It's a board where the support team ask "Can anyone throw some light on this?", if any of us get stumped.

The general consensus seems to be "Life would be easier if he just switches the host." ;)

After all, what you're asking is pretty basic stuff. I've never, ever heard of a host refusing, to be honest.

The fact that they say that it'll affect all of their customers is total bollox, I believe (I could be wrong, though.)

kat

More ideas...

Can you install this?

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2054

That will tell us what the real error is, coz eval hides the real one, unfortunately.

Then, once we've sorted that out, there are patches that can be installed, via Package Manager, rather than going the full upgrade route.

After refreshing tons of timed out pages it seems like the upgrade finally did what it was supposed to do! I kept track of the current steps and substeps and just kept on it.

It just started working so I have some fixing to do, but I'm gonna look at the mod that you suggested for future use.

Thanks again, K@. I'll mark this as solved later if everything seems to work.

apmannen

No problems so far, just that the mods that once were, is no more.

When trying to install a mod I get this error msg:

Quote2: mkdir(): SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid/gid is 207472/207472 is not allowed to access x/smf/Packages/temp/SMF1 owned by uid/gid 398/398
File: x/smf/Sources/Subs-Package.php
Line: 1232

Is it the safe mode that is abusing me again or is this solveable in another way?

Should I install the mods manually instead? I found this site which shows step for step how to do it (i guess). http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=parse

(All mods were pre-installed when I took over the site so I'm kinda nooby with all this)

kat

Your host really does seem to be a bag of poo, to me.

This safe mode crap is going to seriously affect everything you do, on your site.

I'd really look at changing your host, apmannen. They sound AWFUL!

Yes, you can add the mods manually, unless they do anything to the database.

Depending on how many mods you have, that could take AGES!

I wonder how the former owner managed to install things...

By the way, make sure the mods are compatible with v1.1.11. If they're not, you ought to get updates for them, if they exist.

Yes, I agree and I will change host.  But for now my focus is to get the basic functionality of the site up and running until that change occurs.

Luckily it seems like we only had 2-3 mods installed, so adding them manually should not be a lifetime of work.

A new backup has been made; I'm going in for some file surgery!
