I (and my users) would love for the "View Newest Messages First" flag to be an option that users can change in their profile.

I agree that would be nice. A quick fix is to just create another theme that has the option enabled.
Just do it, go Charter! [Unknown] offered me a spot on the dev team! I swear it!
