Spanish packages

At the website I see two packages for spanish, spanish_es and spanish_latin, as spaniard I feel a little disappointed because spanish people are latin as well (latin is a person whose mothern language comes from latin, frenchs, portuguese, rumanians, mexicans, etc we are all latins). So here we are differentiating two versions of a language by a bad use of the word "latin".

It's like we start calling american english as "english_anglo-saxon", it doesn't make sense right? so it would be better if the second package is called spanish_am (american spanish) or spanish_american.

But millen, South America is also worlwide known as Latin America, with "Latin" also used for culture, art, music, etc in most language, Spanish included. "Latin" is many times misused and can cause some arguments.

In SMF, I believe spanish_latin is spanish_latin american shortened. I don't remember anyone else complaining.

BTW Latin language is ancient Roman with Latin derived from Latium.

Sure, but calling just "latin" to latin americans is a bad practice, whatever it's shortened or not, more people nowadays is calling latin americans just "latins", but we are latins too (latin-europeans).

And the package doesn't seem to be shortened, it's just called latin, making the bad concept of the world more popular. It would be nice if it could be changed as I said above, but if it can't be done...well, nothing more to say.

Latin i s for Latin/South America and es is for Spain.  There is   somewhat of difference between the two so the two packages were created

I posted your remark millen to put this in debate. Maybe some of our spanish translators will make remarks and inputs about this.

The aim is to make things as clear as possible for all, of course.

As far as I can remember (2005) spanish_latin was always this way in SMF. Have a quick look at archives.

Spanish was just spanish for quite some time, later spanish_latin was added but some independent Spanish SMF support sites started using spanish_es instead of just spanish, also both started to appear in SMF site. That caused some problems, it took me some time in TP to understand why a member could not use the UTF-8 TP language files, the extension was the cause. Similar problems were observed with mod translations using different extensions. spanish_es later became the standard in SMF for Spanish.

Spanish is the original language, the language differentiated with use in central and south America, otherwise known as Latin America, so spanish_latin was used for differentiating in SMF.

There was never intention to insult anyone, it's common term and quite a few current and ex SMF Team members are of Latin America origin.
