Understanding how board orders work

I know I have been asking quite a few questions lately and I feel kind of badly.

However, there are a couple things left that I just need to learn to be able to continue advancing my knowledge and continuing to develop better code.

One thing that I do not understand is how board order is determined, obviously by two select boxes. But how does the actual code work? - Yes, I have looked at it, and can't make sense of it.

My goal is to learn how to make dropdowns to change order for other things, so I am more wanting to learn the exact mechanics on how I can modify and learn the code.

Probably stores as a string with comma delimiter and outputs into an array compiler?

Board order is determined by the board_order column. When a board is added, all boards after it are physically moved down in that column and the new one inserted.
