Avatar Upload Internal Server Error

When I am uploading a avatar I am getting an internal server error.

Now I know this is due to GD because when I turn of GD resize it's works fine but tells me avatar is too big.

I just wondered if any one knows why it might be giving the internal server error cause of GD.

GD might not be installed, or the picture might be enormous.

Admin > Support and Credits - should tell you what version of GD is installed.
