There's already been a few topics on this. SMF would have to be completely rewritten to follow HipHop's coding methods in order to work.

There's a certain way PHP must be written in order to work, not to mention it's only PHP 5.2 compatible.

well i think that this is something that is worth investigating, it would hurt for smf to follow the lead of the industry, which it already has a good lead, but it would take it to a whole new level.

and potentially with the "other" projects smf is thinking about doing, something like hiphop could be one of those new projects. could potentially get invovled with hiphop software, and bring a new direction for smf's open source goals.

facebook as 500+ million members, being friends with them, could do no harm. :)

So, apart from the fact SMF would basically need to be rewritten from scratch, it's a good plan, yeah?

You see, apart from the fine print it sounds like a wonderful thing.

Except the fine print means no easy upgrades, no custom modifications, no custom themes - you end up ripping out anything that approaches making it customisable, as well as error handling.

I'd rather see SMF make 3.0 more structured and approachable rather than refining their process for the real minority of users.

function loadProfileFields($force_reload = false)
Profile-Modify.php

a huge array is loaded and then most of it unloaded. imporvements such as these and other tweaks on smf's footprint would be a reasonable percentage of smf rewritten. so 3.0 could potentially be a leap forward to both imporvement of the software to remain top brand, but also linking with big names that are most definitely strong standing companies, could, like i said before, catapult smf to the for front of furm software, undesputed.

taking all arguments away from smf being top dog would no doubt bring a new dinamic here for us all. as well as the open source concept.

arantor, it is possible, and it would be fun. :)

my help would be limited, but i can assure you, i would put in all i could towards the effort.

and hiphop being open source itself, there could be a version made for smf. that could also bring smf closer to facebook status. does vbulliten or phpbb have it, smf does. :)

Yes, it's possible. But it's not worth it for something as general purpose as SMF. If you make it capable of running on HipHop, you won't be able to customise it very easily because so much of the code that makes customisation work will have to go entirely.

HipHop is a specialised tool for specialised installations! I'm not disputing that it's possible, I'm disputing the point of doing it. There are many things worth doing with SMF, I assure you, I know that better than most. But to spend all the time and effort making it run on HipHop when less than 1% of the SMF forum users could use it, really is a waste of time - unless you're looking at an unmanaged VPS or better, you won't be able to use the HipHop binaries anyway.

So, you're planning to have your PC 24/7 eating your resources and when you open a heavy(ish) program your forum start getting slow and collapse just for the fact that "Hey! I can turn a forum into a real PC software!"?

Besides, it would only work in linux...
