Hey guys, myself and the rest of the moderator team from an established board decided to create a new one and it launched this week.  But the intermittent lag is absolutely atrocious.  For a while, the speed is decent.  Sometimes it's even optimal.  But then there are periods where it's unbearably slow.  I mean sometimes it can take 45 seconds after clicking on a link.  It's ridiculous.

Here's my site:
http://wrestlinglegendsforum.com [nofollow]

I contacted Godaddy support twice and both techies told me it's not them.  They ran ping tests, trace routes, etc and told me it's the SMF software.  I told them it's also slowing down on the splash screen, which is just a tiny jpg and php.  Then they told me it's maybe the site banner.  I let them know these slowdowns were happening even before that banner was placed.  So they said it's either my ISP or my network.  I told them it's not just me experiencing these slowdowns and that many of our members are reporting the same thing.  All these techies did was give me the runaround.

I'm on godaddy's economy hosting plan (unlimited bandwidth supposedly) which is shared hosting (stupid me, I didn't realize that when purchasing, but I'm new to all of this).

Before I place all the blame on godaddy, I want to know if there's anything I may be doing wrong?  When I setup the SMF forum and the database, I used godaddy's own internal installation service so I assume everything was done correctly.

Does any kind soul have any ideas what I might be able to do to have consistently decent speeds?  Any settings I should change?  Any idea what I can tell godaddy to get this issue resolved?  I'm desperate here.  My board members are complaining and aren't posting much because it's so frustrating to sit and wait forever while a page loads.

Any ideas?  I (and the board members and mod team) would REALLY appreciate any tips.

1st Level GoDaddy support is almost always going to blame problems on your scripts... rarely do they take deeper looks at the server (hell, who knows if they even have server access) to see if it's something locking it up.  If they ran a ping test or traceroute, that tells me they really don't know what they're doing because that's not going to reveal a hung mysql process causing PHP to hang while querying the database.  If it's not too late, see if you can get a refund from GoDaddy and go somewhere else.  If it is too late, ask to have your issue escalated to someone with root server access to check the processes on the server on which you reside or your database resides to see if there is something blocking processes.

Shared hosting is fine, but bad providers are the big problem. They just happen to dominate the shared hosting space (people go with cheap even if it's garbage). The big warning banner is that it's the lowest plan yet they offer "unlimited" resources.

Based on experience, it's likely that one or more other people on the server or database side are using most of the server resources, slowing other sites. With the way the servers are packed full, it only takes one runaway process to make things miserable for everyone else on the server. If you can get the ticket escalated, someone with server access might be able to find the problem. Given that GoDaddy is infamous for doing everything possible to maximize profit margins and given that using qualified people is expensive, i wish you luck in getting someone competent that has access to look into your issue.

I had the same problem with another cheap shared host service.  The mysql/php-cgi processes were always pegged out with other users.  My forum site was mostly inactive but very slow.  I ended up moving the forum to a cloud server at aws.amazon.com.  The first year is free and I estimate it will run about $15-$20 a month after that.  As a bonus, I get total root control and I don't have to worry about hardware going down.

In other words the best idea is to move to another host. You will find plenty in the hosts and hosting section here at SMF that will give you no issues.

Try Montecarlohosting or Charlottezweb they have been hosting users for years.

Forget Godaddy, they are terrible for hosting... Try some serious hosting, ServInt for example. ;)
