Can I import SMF 1.x database contents into a brand new SMF 2.x install?

Hi all,

I want to upgrade to SMF 2.x (currently running SMF 1.1.14) and wanted to know if I could do a clean install of 2.x and then import the contents from my current forum or better yet, can I just point my new install to the current database (used by my 1.1.14 version)?

TIA,

Michel

I realize the databases are different between 2.0 and 1.1, but since the upgrade removes all installed mods and does not convert the themes, having a way to set up a clean 2.0 server, install all the desired mods and themes, tweak it until you've got it the way you want it, then IMPORT your 1.1 database would sure seem like a pretty desirable upgrade option that has surely come up a number of times over the past couple of years.  Is this a possibility?  Has anything been created to do this?

I have over a dozen mods installed that are key components to how people use my server, and I have so heavily customized my main theme that I have had to do manual updates since 1.1.5 because the updaters won't run.

If I followed the normal major upgrade process as described on this site, and everything went perfect with the upgrade, it could still take days to get all the new mods installed (assuming they all install right) and then rebuild a new template from scratch.  Sure seems like a better business practice to get the new server up and running first then do a cut-over . . .

the upgrade does as you call it an import of the database it makes it match what is required for 2.0 to run.

Well... Followed the instructions from this post and got the following error:

Unknown column 'a.attachment_type' in 'field list'

The reason IO wanted to start with a brand new install is that now my new forum would work under PHP 5 instead of 4.0.27 if I just upgrade the old one.

QuoteThe final step in upgrading SMF, is to run the upgrading tool. Navigate with your browser to the directory where SMF is located. It should redirect you to the upgrade.php file and prompt you to run the upgrade. In example: www.yourdomain.com/forum/upgrade.php.

I never got that, instead I got the error mentioned above...

Should I try accessing the "upgrade.php" file directly?

you need to put that url into your browser to run the upgrade.php script, if you dont run it you get the error you posted above

Publi-Script

Sorry, but when things does not happen as predicted, I tend to get weary.

For me "Navigate with your browser to the directory where SMF is located" means accessing my forum as I do normally (the new index.php redirecting me to the upgrade script) but since this did not happen I did not know if it was safe to run the upgrade script directly.

the index.php does not redirect to the upgrade.php script, it would only redirect to the install.php script but you are not doing a fresh install.

I have been running the upgrade script for 25 min now and I have still not a single table backed up... Is this normal?

no, who is your host? also if you have a backup already made you dont need to use the backup feature of the upgrade script. your upgrade might take a long time at this rate.

that is your problem, godaddy is a known overseller, i would recommend you find a new host that is not oversold.

Publi-Script

What does "overselling" has to do with anything?

I have been with them for the last 7 years and did not experience any problems  so far...

when you have an oversold host, they give you more assets then they could possibly give, therefore they tend to have more websites on a server then the server can easily handle, which gives you issues like you are seeing with your upgrade. or your forum could be slow or you can be pushed to a bigger plan with them because you are using up too many resources on the server. which is not really true they just want more money out of you.

Publi-Script

Well, almost there...

My forum is now upgraded to 2.01 but the menu items (other than "my messages') do not show. Looking at the SOURCE I can see that the proper links are in place but there is simply no text to click on.

you need to reset your theme to default themes for 1.1.* do not work on 2.0 try adding index.php?theme=1 to your url.
