Would it cause problems to have SMF installed on both a domain and sub-domain that point to the same MySQL database?

I want to create a new SMF install that can act as a mobile version, with a different theme.

Ex. (Install SMF on mysite.com [nofollow] with one theme then install a fresh version on m.mysite.com [nofollow] with a more mobile optimized theme, both of which point to the same database so that they show the sames post and what not)

Thanks!

Interesting question...

Even if it would work that way I would wonder if search engines would view it as double content?

We use tapatalk for people to access our site with mobile devices. I don't use tapatalk a lot myself, but a few of our technicians seem to like it.

Is your existing SMF theme with ;wap etc. unsuitable for you on mobile devices? I'm not familiar with how that's implemented -- whether there's a completely different theme, or whether the main theme is sort of modified on the fly to work better on mobile (suppress images, etc.). Does anyone know? Are your mobile devices failing to pick up the mobilized theme? You should see ;wap, etc. (imode? wap2?) at the end of the URL.

wap just seems so old to me, lol...
Who wants to use wap on a smart phone?

Yeah, I'm talking more for a smartphone than a WAP worth phone.
I want more than just text, I want a full theme that is optimized for a small touch screen.

i am not sure if what you want to do can really be done, smf only supports 1 default theme for the whole forum, you would need a way for the theme to detect that the user is on a mobile browser and go from there.

You seem to have missed my original idea.
I want to have two separate install of SMF with two separate default themes on a domain and a subdomain.
Mobile users can go to the subdomain, computer users can go the domain.
I am just worried that having a domain and a subdomain that are linked to the same MySQL database could cause some sort of problems.

Illori

as far as i know even if you do that, there is only ONE default theme per smf install, so if they share the database it will not fix the issue of only one default theme.

jarrett.crews

After some experimentation I found out that you are correct. Only one theme per database.

jarrett.crews

And now I broke it :D
I switched theme on the subdomain to a test mobile theme which switched both of the installs to the same theme.
I them switched the subdomain back to the default theme, but the domain is stuck as the mobile theme.
It also seems to have broken the link to database as the main site is no longer seeing any post.
So, all in all this is a horrible way to do this, haha.

they both load just fine here for the default curve theme. try adding index.php?theme=1 to the url and see if that helps you any.

There is a mobile theme on the theme site here, and there is a paid version that is even better available. I have the paid version installed and it auto detects a mobile user and displays the mobile theme for them.  Do a search for SMF4Mobile.  I am not sure if I am allowed to post the link here or not.

Illori

you can post the link, it is in the selling stuff board.

Thanks Illori, I thought I remembered seeing it here, but wasn't completely sure.
