Hi all,

I've been a happy SMF user for many years and today I've dared to upgrade (using the Lunarpages Softaculous) one of my forums...
from v1.1
I've been a good boy and made a backup before
During this process I got an error and the forum did not work anymore, I tried to restore the backup but this did'nt work...

This is the information I got druing the upgrade

SMF has been successfully upgraded at :
(((I seem to be not allowed to post external links))))

However, the upgrade will be completed by the software itself, so please visit the following URL :
xxx://stijnstassijns.org/stijnforum/upgrade.php

We hope the upgrade process was easy.

++Yeah the upgrade was very easy so I went on and started the upgrade.php...  And this is what I got :

Database Changes

Executing database changes

Please be patient - this may take some time on large forums. The time elapsed increments from the server to show progress is being made!

Executing upgrade script 2 of 2.
Executing: "Changing column names." (1 of 42 - of this script)

!!Error!

Incorrect key file for table 'smf_themes'; try to repair it

-----------------------------------
So, I contacted my server host who told me : "upgrade SMF manually depending on the differences in the two versions."

Well I am not a pc-geek, I manage to work with this (super great) program but right now I am in euh... trouble.  (aaaaargh!)

I might have an idea where there might be a problem, long time ago I installed a DUTCH LANGUAGE thing (I am Dutch ;)) and this gave some small errors so maybe..?

Please?  Anyone who can help me?

thank you very much.

Chas Large

If you have a backup of the database, you should be able to transplant that into a new install of SMF depending on the version. You say you had 1.1 but there have been many variants of 1.x Currently the highest is 1.1.15. Do you know exactly what version you were running before and what version softalicious was attempting to upgrade to?

If it's just below 1.1.15 then the database is pretty much safe and can be transplanted. Here's what I would do.

Run softalicious again to install a new forum in another directory.

Restore the old database to the new forum.

Run repair settings to correct the paths to the new location.

Reinstall the required languages and mods.

If all is well, delete the old forum directory (ftp) and then rename the new forum directory to the old name and run repair settings again to change the paths once more, that way your external links will still work. If your not bothered about external links to your site, don't bother with renaming just delete the old forum directory.

Please DO NOT PM me with support requests. Post the problem in the appropriate Support Board so everyone can benefit from the advice given.

Can you ask your host provider to repair your db tables or do it yourself via cPanel > phpMyAdmin > Select DB > Select required tables and go down select Repair Table(s) action and hit run. (Not saying make backup coz you already did one and try to upgrade again)

JimM

Welcome to SMF woefiet.

Chas Large has given you some good information.  Did you decide to go that way or try to repair the table and then try the upgrade again as Antes suggested?

Let us know if you were able to complete the upgrade.

Question, I just updated my smf file through my server, and then about 2 hours after that, the simpleportal mod was sort of kicked out, do have the backup made before the updates, how do I install the backup to forum or server..???

Hi all,

I never saw the answers I got here cause it was an urgent situation, I needed to have that forum online ASAP right then.. So after trying and trying, and waiting 48 hours for a reply I asked my host provider to put back the original backup... I did check this forum several times after I posted my questions but could not wait any longer.

Anyway, thanks a lot to all of you who tried to help!!!

But... the problem still remains, I cannot upgrade and there is a problem in the Dutch language part of my forum (some of the chars are replaced by strange signs which gives a bad impression to some visitors).
It's clear to me that I cannot do this myself.  I tried through my provider but did not get a descent reply or solution.

So what IS the problem :

° as written in my first post here : I cannot upgrade.
° there is a fault in some language modules (I am Dutch speaking, so the forum is entirely dutch but with annoying faults in some chars).  Someone told me to "upgrade the language module" but I have searched and searched but see no possibility on how to do that, and even when I succeed, would'nt it be better if I can update to a newer version, this has not been done in years...).

So, to the point, is there anyone here who can (has the time and knowledge) and wants to help me?  I am willing to pay something for your time, I would really like a solution and possibly very fast (My client told me he wants the language problem fixed this week...).

I would really appreciate your help...

Thank you very much.

CHAZ LARGE :
your answer (making a new forum, reinstalling the backup, fixing everything, etc) seems a good possible solution but I am afraid I m simply not into those things enough...
A bit like with what ANTEZ said I could do, I tried but as soon as I got there I don't find what I think I should be looking for.

ANTEZ :
I tried what you proposed (I had never been to the phpMyAdmin screen) and I saw 63 tables, but had no idea which ones I should try to repair..
I was searching for something like 'language' or 'Dutch' there but did not find anything so I decided not to start making perhaps more damage...
But thanks anyway!

Some extra info : My actual version on that forum is version 1.1.12...

Meanwhile I have been "studying" and I thought I found the way to just upgrade the Dutch language...
I did like I found on the SMF site : downloaded the latest Dutch language ZIP and installed it (after backup) in the root of my forum.  But... now I have several errors on my forum :

° Copyright issue : I did not touch anything else (only uploaded the Dutch Language)
° Main part of the Task Bar (I m not sure I m using the right word here, I m Dutch, its the bar above that says  "Home, administration, ...." that has mainly gone, the only thing that's still there is "Mail" (in Dutch), so I presume that these are images which are now missing...?)
° you cannot interact anymore with the forum, replies, topics, it's gone...

The main structure and context seems to be still there, and I think the language problems seem solved (hooray!  ??), but I created a lot more problems...

I tried, in many ways, but I m lost... And its urgent, I need help please,...
Luckily I made a backup (have several) but it seems that the forum itself is still ok, maybe only some images are missing?

Am I stupid?

(ok, please do not answer that one...)

Thank's a million Mr Burglar  8)

This man helped me enormously, I was really lost here and the solution was not that simple...
I am very impressed by his professionality and the way he helped me.

There are names like "SMF hero" and "Super Hero" underneath some names here, I know understand what they mean, some of you are really super heroes who don't want to be paid, modest knights with great capacities, real heroes in cyberspace.

Does it show that I am very, very happy?

Thank you Mr Burglar, I am in debt with you.

No problem you're welcome ;)
