Suggestion for abandoned SMF Mods.

See here many mods abandoned by the authors.

I think the moderators of the SMF had to put another collaborate to continue these abandoned projects from 1 year of abandonment. Or even open a poll to elect the persons concerned by the development of the mod.

I don't know if this issue has already been discussed on the Forum, I found in my research.

Thing is, most of the mods that are a year old didn't specify a licence, which means we'd have to get in contact with the author to persuade them to specify one. We can't just take over old mods just because they're old.

There are mods on mine on the mod site and I'd be *very* unhappy if someone just took it over because I hadn't kept up with it. The law (actual copyright law) says it's my work, and no-one can just take it off me for any reason.

Implementing something to assist in handling abandoned mods better is something I have considered and want to design for the new customisation site I'm working on....

But licenses can create issues and will need to be looked into and designed properly.

NOTE: I'm on my tablet so I can't make a proper reply, I'll edit this post when I can.

Copyright says that someone can't simply take your mod code and claim it as their own. I see no reason that someone couldn't take an [apparently] abandoned mod, reimplement it so it doesn't technically violate the original author's copyright, and issue it as their own (under a better license). That's the whole point of "open source". To minimize confusion (multiple copies of very similar mods floating around), it would of course be better for the mod owner to formally turn over ownership or cooperate in some other way (such as relicensing old mods), but there's no way to legally force them to do so.

Let's not get into SCO-style hair splitting and claim copyright on "i++;".

It would have to be completely reimplemented from scratch. Reimplementing the concept is fine, but not a single line of code could be reused unless it were physically not possible to do it any other way. (Stuff like $i++ would be fine, of course, because there's not really a lot you can do about that :P)

Mods that are not under a licence are not open source by definition.
