I installed the latest version of smf 2.0.4 and I am using godaddy but the thing is im stuck on pulling up the actual forum. I have the version installed on my computer and all of the files/folders are in my ftp but I want to know what is the next step? Im not understanding the wiki page as I am lost with the whole binary thing yet I regularly work with FTP thru godaddy and I do have filezilla. But how do I bring up the actual forum? Can someone tell me in lamen terms as that will help out better..

Kindred

you need to put all of the forum files onto your goDaddy server.
Having them on your PC won't do any good.... :)

Load the forum files ont your goDaddy server, add a database for SMF to use and run install.php

To run the install, you type in your browser, http://yourwebsite.com/install.php.

Make sure to make any changes to the url depending on which directory you place your files in.

Quote from: CheeseHead05 on July 19, 2013, 12:19:11 AMI do have filezilla.

Lesson one: Go to Filezilla's "Transfers" menu and make sure "Transfer type" is set to "binary". The default, "auto", breaks certain files.

Mostly just when backing up and then uploading for the attachments, correct? But very good to get done and out of the way.

MrPhil

It all depends on what format "text" files are on the PC: Windows format or Linux format. If the files are in Windows format (CR-LF line ends), you must use "ASCII" mode for those files. If Linux format (NL line ends), you must use "binary" for those files. Binary files (images, etc.) must always be transferred in "binary" mode.

For backup purposes (Linux server) use binary to both download and upload. Some Windows editors (ViM, Notepad++, etc.) can browse/edit files in Linux format.
