Query about membergroups

Hi,

new to setting up SMF so apologise if this has been asked before.

Some background on the question first, i've just migrated the forum over from MiniBB to SMF and everything came over fine, but on the minibb forum, we have a number of 'restricted' forums whereby you need to request access.

I've setup various membergroups for the forum areas such as "jokes", "Social" etc, and i've set them to be "request"  so users can request to join them, but i've got a little issue whereby when i approve the "jokes" group (for example) it becomes their primary group, and therefore the only see the "jokes" forum (as in the permissions section of the jokes membergroup i've said only show jokes forum).

If the user then goes back in and sets their primary group to "registered" then then get all the standard, open forums and the joke forum.

So the question is, can i specify that the users default membergroup is always registered, or have i done something wrong here, as what i want is a default set of forums for everyone, then groups to control seeing the additional areas??

edit the group and set its visibility to invisible, they can now join the group and it would be a secondary/additional group.
