I was just trying to install a version of the forum software, Simple Machines smf_2_0_14 using the standard installer, onto a new database that I set up:

Database server

Server: nn.nnn.n.nnn via TCP/IP
Server type: MySQL
Server version: 5.7.17 - MySQL Community Server (GPL)
Protocol version: 10
User: [email protected]
Server charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

and was told:

Critical Error!
The version of your database server is very old, and does not meet SMF's minimum requirements.

Please ask your host to either upgrade it or supply a new one, and if they won't, please try a different host.

What is wrong with version 5.7.17  ??

smf 2.0.14 needs php 5.4 or higher.

Quotesmf 2.0.14 needs php 5.4 or higher.

Bank on the nail !!

PHP 5.4 is the answer.

This seems to have been the problem, rather than the MySQL version as suggested by the error message.

I have turned up the PHP version to 5.4 and the error message has gone away.  I will experiment later to see if I can turn up the PHP version a little higher (5.6 maybe) without damaging the free running of other scripts (of a non-smf nature), on that server / under that domain name.

Thanks to everybody for their help.
