Editor Append

Hi Everyone,
Can anybody help on this please.
I want to be able to append a link to the message on a new Topic.
I have it ok on the Textarea version but I get nothing when the toggle button is clicked. i.e. wysiwyg mode is selected. Is there an easy way to ensure that the appended link works on both.
Failing that, what is the easiest way to append to the wysiwyg message data.
