"Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default" question

I've updated to 2.0.18 and originally had "Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default" checked in my "look and Layout" settings.  Anytime I used the  emoticons they'd show up as the graphic in the edit box and then when I clicked "Preview" or "Post" it would all crash and give me a 403 error. Unchecking that selection fixed the problem. I'm understanding that the WYSIWYG editor has issues and not likely to be fixed anytime soon if at all. If this is the case is there a way to gray out this selection so my members can't even choose it?
