Hi my forum says there is an update available but although the FTP details work in FileZilla FTP it is not accepted in the Package manager, saying "invalid server"

If I try to upload the patch using upload package it says the package I am trying to install cannot be found.

If I manually upload the patch to the packages folder using the Filezilla app,  SMF says "No packages yet"

Am I being stupid???

Help please?

1- the ftp information request is due to file permissions, not upload permissions

2- you are missing a temp directory in the packages folder

Hi, I created a temp folder as you suggested and gave it R/W permissions but it still does not work.

Ok, another thing I don't understand is that if I delete the smf_2-1-4_patch.tar.gz file from the packages folder i still get an error as follows:
"the following files need to made writeable to continue installation /smf_2-1-4_patch.tar.gz"

I have of course logged off & on after removing the file but still get the error message above.
I have also copied it back into the folder & given it R & W permissions from the FTP App.

If the system is asking for the ftp info, then there is a problem with the file or directory permissions, because the ONLY reason it asks is for the system to try to adjust the permissions using ftp chmod

I asked the hosting company to investigate & they said the error log shows %system32%cmd.exe was prevented from running which the hosted Windows servers do not allow.

They suggested that I extract the files locally & upload the extracted files to the server, would this work?
I assume I put the extracted files in the packages folder??

I'm sorry... what?  That doesn't make a lot of sense.

The update package is just another mod.
If you have not had any trouble installing mods, then you should not have trouble installing the update

but no...   the files in the packages folder are expected to the tar.gz or zip files - not the extracted contents of those files.

Thats what I thought but apart from a full install of SMF 2.1.3 I have not applied any mods  :-\
Is my hosting company giving me a bit of blarney....

escc-forum

Ok, I forgot the forum is hosted on a Windows server (historical & not sure hosting company will allow me to migrate to a Linux server without exchanging money which is not an option).
The patch is only available as a .gz file, if I extract the files and zip them up and upload the zip file will it work?

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

At least in theory, if you extract it with a tool like 7zip, and then create a zip file of the contents with the exact same structure, it should work just fine.

I brought this up with the team, I'm unsure why we don't have a .zip available at the moment.

Unfortunately creating the zip file & uploading it to the packages folder didn't fix the issue  :(

Okay, based on what I hear from the devs that's not surprising. Apparently my assumption was wrong, and you should be able to use the tar.gz just as well, as it should be handled in SMF and not through the OS.

If you have never installed mods though, you should be able to update with the large upgrade without losing anything.

Many thanks, I haven't installed any mods but it seems that the large upgrade route might be the best course of action.

FWIW I really appreciate all the hard work that goes into SMF, many thanks from the rest of us that rely on you.
