Board login landing page??

I am looking at this solution for consideration in setting up a Forum based solution for a non profit organization.

Picture this:
     - 1 "private" (restricted to Board members only) board
     - 4+ "public" (members only) boards
     - The board moderators/admins will either manually add or approve (public only) to the appropriate boards
     - One install -- I saw a post on how this can be done, so I'm good there
     - one subdomain (forums.-----.org)

Now I want a login landing page to have the users login and then only see the boards they're authorized to see.  The register page can show the public boards available to register for.

What's the best way, if possible/feasible to do this?

Standard permissions with membergroups and boards.
