Hey all -
I am (as are my users) accustomed to the way phpBB handles unread posts, i.e. closing your browser will result in all currently unread posts being marked read.

Is there an option to make SMF 1.0.7 behave in this manner?  Is it something that's available in 1.1?

I've looked through my CP and have searched this site extensively (so I apologize if this is a repost, but I did try :)), but can't find anything about this.

Thanks!

There is no such option in SMF. It doesn't make any sense IMO. An unread post is not read untill actually read or marked as read.

And that's fine for you, but I and quite a few other people disagree.

Thank you for the answer, though.

You can always request a mod or see if someone can make code to do what you want.

Personally, I find it annoying, especially if my session times out on a forum (sometimes I get called away or have to do some admin thing for my job) then I return and now don't know what I haven't read yet.

Yeah, I suppose I could do that.  I'd do it myself if I weren't so swamped right now (new job + two contracts + Disgaea == no free time ;D).

Yes, there are down sides, but if you use a permanent login and Firefox, crashes and timeouts tend to be very rare occurrences.  Like I said, it's something a lot of us just got used to... no, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it grows on you like a good fungus.

Sounds like my job right now.  :) Three major contracts (one just ended, one is ending this Friday mostly, one somewhat ongoing) at work, the usual support stuff there, my volunteer web stuff, housework, and now a broken garage door to deal with.

I didn't mean timeout like in page load, but more the current session expires (usually about 20 minutes).

Good luck in your mod request. There are lots of talented people making those things, so someone should be able to do something for you.
