Need to know the php info from your server, version installed and whats configured?
Lazy like me and don't want to call techSupport?
Unzip & upload this file to your web server "phpinfo.php" and point your browser to it "http://www.yourhost.com/phpinfo.php"

I found this very helpful as newbie to decide what version of SMF to install.
