What I dislike about SMF

SMF has alot more features compared to other free and paid forum software. For instance compared to phpbb2 or even phpbb3 it still has more features.

But where it does lose to phpbb is its layout. SMF's layout compared to phpbb is more cluttered and ugly. Also most of SMF's icons are terribly ugly while phpbb's icons are OK.

When you change the theme it usually helps alot but still it doesn't look that good.

If you don't like the default theme, change it to a custom theme.
Simple as that.

Yes, check the theme page, lots of cool themes. PHPBB is older than SMF so it's easy to understand why they have more themes.

If you dont like the layout or template you can edit the theme's template & CSS . Its alot easier in SMF than in phpBB.

I just have to note my disagreement on this. In addition to other boards SMF has the most pleasing preinstalled themes in it. The reason there isn't more to download is probably because it doesn't need any. It looks cool without customs. :p

It all depends on taste. I personally find the 1.1 default (Core) to be fairly nice, others hate it. The nice thing is that this is also very customizable to suit the taste of whoever might be running the forum.

Another BB that has a very nice layout is MyBB. :)

No, changing the theme doesn't change the actual layout. :)

A good example is how the quotes are showed. Way uglier than other forum software. :(

Yes it does, most themes just do superficial changes. Look at the "Comic" theme installed on this board for a good example of some changes you can do.

How so? They look the same to me as other boards (checked against IPB 1.3 and phpBB 2 real quick).

The quote boxes need more padding and bigger font. Also it has this mashed up look when its a double quote. :)

Here's the comic theme: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=133881.0;topicseen;theme=5

Then add some extra padding and a bigger font to your css! It uses a class called.. suprise.. 'quote' ;)

DIY, eh? ;)

In addition, the reason most people only make small changes to their themes is that in most cases what has been tried and used before works well. Although themes with horizontal displays can be nice to show the possibilities, they are harder to use.

Yup. Personally I think that by default there should be more padding and bigger font. No biggie though. :)

Thanks for your help. ;)

How does the layout matter as long as there are themes and ofcourse, anyone can make their own theme.
