Question vs. PHPBB, tpl files

Hi

A friend of mind told me about this board, and I'm strongly considering moving my forum from phpbb to SMF.

My question is this? 

On my php board, I was able to change the look of some header pages, footer pages, to run advertisements, etc.  The files I changed were .tpl files that I opened in a text editor, and was able to change the code appropriately.

Will I be able to do the same thing in SMF?  In other words, are the files the same (ie. tpl files), or something that can be opened in a text editor?

You can customize SMF.  It's very easy.  Each section has its own template file, with an overall index template file.  Check out the Themes board and the online manual for more information.
