I would like to request an enhanced shoutbox.
Currently there are a few shoutboxes available but they don't meet what I need/want.

I would like to request a shoutbox with being able to assign certain permissions, having the following options:
-Posting message
-Editing it
-Deleting it

What I don't want is the shoutbox to be only visible for certain usergroups (so the admin only wrap code in the template won't do sadly) but a shoutbox to notify people of important things which is visible right away.

I realise that there is a news function, but that is quite limited (only 1 line visible) whereas I want the lastest 5 messages shown.

It can be included as a core package which can be enabled.

I really do not recommend MKPortal, instead of that you can install TinyPortal that has that functionality :)

As a feature..., I disagree, that is just a toy to one community, you can create one board just for "chat".

SMF 7 is where it gets good. That has time travel. You can go back and post before the guy who flamed you. :P

Actually, I want something like the current news function but then more expanded to notify my users of important things. It is basically the only thing that is holding me back from switching to SMF.

HecKel

as I said, you can allways use tinyPortal ;) I use tinyPortal ONLY to provide one extra menu, you don't have to use all that features :) It's very configurable :)

A tiny issue: It is for SMF 1.1.2 and not 1.1.5. I don't know the differences.

And can I configure who can write messages in the shoutbox on TP? Since I couldn't find anything related to that.

Jntg4

why don't you like MKPortal, if you think about it, it allows MediaWiki to be ported without editing files, yet5 it will still use your forum member database in a mod, and if you have Safe Mode on like i do, it works pretty good.

Jntg4, I won't answer that question in public since that can be interpreted as "anti-publicity". If you wanna know, send me one PM.

Kutagh, you should update to 1.1.5 to be running the most current version so that you are protected against any security issues.

Also, if you wish for a shoutbox, have you searched the mod site for them? http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=search;basic_search=shoutbox

And Jntg4, if people do not wish to use MKPortal, that is their own decision. I'm guessing that a full portal system isn't necessary just to get a shoutbox, as there are several shoutbox mods that can be added without a portal.

Eliana, I am running 1.1.5, all that I said is that TP is for 1.1.2 and not for 1.1.5 which indicates that I use 1.1.5 ;)

And about those shoutboxes, the issue is that I can't decide who is allowed to chat in it.

I want to limit the usage of it to the moderator and higher teams to say, but yet allow normal users to see it.
Like I have it at my current phpBB3 forum, only users in certain usergroups such as administrator can write messages in it, while normal users can only see the messages. With the proper permissions, the staff can edit or even delete shouts.
Basically the function is to inform users of things like new staff easily, while we can show multiple lines of text. I want the lastest 5 news messages visible on the board index (no need for other places although it might come in handy)

If someone is willing to work on it, I can provide a testing board with FTP access if required, and of course all credits go to the mod author....

HecKel

If I am not wrong, SMF 1.1.X is only very small changes, for example, security changes. Nothing about layout or functionality :)

So, about TP, you just have to change the XML file and where is 1.1.2 put 1.1.5 and I think that would work without anyproblem :) A lot of MODs works like that ;)

One thing that SMF Developers could consider is ignore the compatibility between small upgrades, most of the time doesn't matter if is 1.1.X or 1.1.Y :)

Still didn't get an answer about the question on whether I can select who can write messages, edit and/or delete messages in the sboutbox...... I did check them all out, am not that much of a noob, but didn't see anywhere whether I can assign permissions. I also have custom usergroups that will be required to have certain settings, and I want to be able to assign them posting permissions yet be capable of taking it off a certain person if he/she abuses the function. I trust the staff but there are always those times that they abuse that trust.

So basically, is there any shoutbox which has those permissions or should I rather stay at phpBB3?
I really like the looks of the SMF stuff and it's admin panel and such, but there are a few essential things that I do need.

On my current (phpBB3) forum, I got the following modifications installed:
-Moderator Can (Preset moderation replies and/or actions, no idea if there is one for this, comes in handy for my forum anyway)
-Shoutbox 1.2 (available modification which isn't fit for me)
-Collapsible Categories (already included in SMF)
-Quick Reply. (Available modification, haven't checked it out yet)

As you can see, it meets for 50% what I would like for features. Downside is that I do need the shoutbox with proper permissions, the one from phpBB3 has several permissions that I can assign, being:
-Use BBcode in shoutbox
-Edit own shouts
-Edit other shouts
-Delete own shouts
-Delete other shouts
-Ignore flood limit (max posts/shouts in a row)
-Use smilies
-Allowed to view shoutbox
-Allowed to view IP of poster
-Allowed to post in shoutbox

As you can see, it is rather extensive.
For me, being capable of using BBcode and smilies don't have to be a selectable permission, they can be included in capable of posting in shoutbox. Viewing IP can be disabled all-together for me. There isn't any need for a flood limit on the shoutbox IMO. Editing own/others and deleting own/others don't have to be seperate in own and others for me, it would be nice though.
So you get an idea of what for shoutbox I'm looking for.

Tinyportal is completely compatible with 1.1.5. Both versions, the 0.9.8 (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item745) and 1.0.5 Beta 1 (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item886). And yeah, you have to be logged into the  TinyPortal site to download them.

As for a shoutbox with extensive permissions, I don't believe any have ever been made. You're free to request it in Mod Requests or in Help Wanted (not for support). I will warn you that I don't think any shoutbox included in SMF by default will have that much control, and I'll use the custom profile fields as an example.

For me, I don't need the extensive control, as long as the basic permissions are "can see" "can post" "can edit" "can delete" and are assignable.

I'll do a request in the Mod Requests then myself. Thank you for your help.
And I did look into TP website as a registered user but couldn't find the information that I wanted.
