Notifications problem

Apologies if this is going over old ground, but I haven't yet seen a definitive answer to this problem...

My notifications seemed to gradually stop working when I was running 1.0.10. One user in particular had been saying that they weren't receiving notifications, despite being subscribed, although I was receiving them at the time. Eventually, however, they just seemed to stop for no obvious reason.

I upgraded to 1.1.2, hoping that this would restore them,  but it made no difference.

What's happening is:

When I reply to an OLD / EXISTING topic for which I have requested notifications, they don't arrive.

If I set up a new topic, and request notifications for that, lo and behold - they arrive, and other members get them too.

My SMF e-mail settings use SMTP, with a named server and account, and I am confident that this is correctly set up, as I can send newsletters out, and they arrive OK. I have tried setting the server to "localhost" with no effect.

I've looked in the smf_log_notify table, and the only thing that strikes me as inconsistent is the value in some of the records' "sent" field. Some records - a relatively small number - are set to "1", while most are set to "0".

I tried setting the record for a test board to "1", then added a reply, which would generate a notification. This field was then reset to "0", but the notification didn't arrive.

I'm not sure what significance this may have, if any...

Can anyone shed light on what is happening? I really need this feature to work reliably, as it is a fundamental communications medium for a project operating between 3 UK local authorities and a software supplier.

Thanks in advance.

Are there any errors in Admin > Forum Error Log?

Have you run maintenance on your forum? Go to Admin > Forum Maintenance and click on these options (wait for each to finish before you click on the next one):

Optimize all tables to improve performance.
Check all files against current versions.
Find and repair any errors.
Recount all forum totals and statistics.

Please do not PM me with support requests unless I invite you to.

Thanks, Sarge...

Just done all those things - Tables optimise OK, no errors found/repaired, and all forums recounted OK.

The file version check throws up some anomalies - mostly to do with Dutch and Spanish language files, so I doubt that these are causing a problem, as my site is in English, with no Dutch or Spanish users! The only file that is not language related that is out of sync is in Current templates: Search.template.php, which is at 1.0 where the current version is 1.1

Can I download this file separately, or do I have to do a full download?

I've also checked the error log - the only error I have got (so far...) is:

8: Undefined index: showTopics
File: /home/sites/xxxxxxx.org.uk/public_html/Sources/Profile.php
Line: 211

Is this relevant at all? (The timing on the message suggests not...)

Hope this helps!

Thanks again and regards

Are there any mods installed in your forum?
Can you uninstall all of them temporarily?

Are you using a custom theme?
Have you tried requesting notification for a topic using the default theme (SMF Default Theme - Core)?

Hi, Sarge...

The only "package" I had actually installed was "Show Topics" v.1.1, which I've now uninstalled. The problem hasn't gone away though - it's still behaving exactly the same.

Likewise, I've tried posting a message using the Default theme, but still no change.

Also tried posting from the Quick Reply box, and the full reply form, but again, no difference.

I'm going to actually delete all of the Packages, including the uninstalled ones, although I don't imagine that this will make any difference.

I may also try setting all of the "sent" fields that have a value of "1" to "0" - see what happens there (after taking a backup of the d/b, of course...).

After uninstalling all mods, try this:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=167282.msg1068116#msg1068116

Essentially, replace your SMF files with ones from the upgrade package. Don't run upgrade.php. After that, run maintenance on your forum again, just to be sure.
